Nigerian Communication Technology Minister, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, has charged the on-going forum on ‘Innovation Through Broadband’ in Abuja to consider and prioritise issue of sustainability of infrastructure development.

She also said that issue of security and data management as well as developing an understanding of how cloud computing has revolutionised e-government, e-health and e-accessibility policies and initiatives, should not be relegated.

“About half of the 11 million Nigeria users are under the age of 25 (5.6million), which perhaps underscores the importance of understanding how young people make use of ICTs,” she said, stressing that beyond knowing who is using social media, this Forum should discuss ways in which such tools could be leveraged as a platform for development, learning and increasing communication.

In addition, she said, the Youth is a demographic segment, the Forum cannot afford not to discuss as well as women, empowerment and ICTs.

“Women make up about 50 per cent of the population of the world and we cannot hope to achieve our socio-economic and development goals whilst isolating half of our potential,” she said.

Johnson emphasised that the success of policies and initiatives depends on the ability to accurately identify the scale and nature of the gender divide that exist and strive to bridge same.

She quoted the increasing influence of social media, according to “Big Mac Index” noting that the informal way of measuring the purchasing power parity between inhabitants of different countries; the number of Facebook users is becoming an informal indication of the social media activity of a country.
