The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GEJ) has announced the setting up of an Advisory Committee whose mandate is to establish the modalities for a National Dialogue or Conference for the country.
President Jonathan made this known today in a broadcast to the nation as it marks her 53 years of independence as a nation and stressed that the Committee will also design a framework and come up with recommendations as to the form, structure and mechanism of the process.
DigitalSENSE Business News learnt from the speech that the Committee will be chaired by Dr. Femi Okurounmu, and Dr. Akilu Indabawa will serve as the Secretary, while the full membership of the Committee will be announced shortly with one month mandate to brief the nation on the nomenclature, structure and modalities of the Dialogue.
He recall his comments to a cross-section of Nigerians in New York during the 68th United Nations General Assembly and  declared that “ we have a duty as Nigerians, whatever may be our differences or prejudices, to always put Nigeria first.”
He condemned the barbaric killing of students and innocent Nigerians in northern part of the country, commiserated with their families and called on all to join hands in fighting the extremism that has stirred the nation in the face instead of politicising security challenges for selfish and political gains.
“In our journey to greatness as a nation, we have built an economy that is robust and erected enduring infrastructure and institutions of democracy. Our social system is now more inclusive, open and compassionate. We are waging a steady battle against poverty, unemployment, and corruption. Our sense of community, solidarity and shared expectation is strong and capable of withstanding the present social, economic and political challenges that still confront us.
“This is no time for the harmful clutches of parochial sentiments and the politics of bitterness, impunity, arrogance and unhelpful indiscipline. We must stand as one, with absolute commitment and resolve to resist any force that threatens us and the sanctity of our union,” he said.
. Making SENSE of digital revolution!
