ITU scores Nigeria low in fixed broadband penetration

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) report released recently on global fixed broadband penetration in 183 countries shows Nigeria as having no score in fixed broadband.

The report dated September placed Nigeria on number 170 with Mauritius leading in Africa and occupying number 67 in world rating, while Switzerland leads in the global rating with 41.9 per cent followed by Netherland, Denmark and France.

DigitalSENSE Business News noted from the report that Nigeria fixed broadband rating is expected as there are not fixed fibre optic lines network on which the broadband services would run on.
However the report posted 10 per cent mobile broadband penetration per 100 inhabitants    for Nigeria as it occupies 90 out of the 170 countries enumerated with Ghana leading in the mobile broadband rating in Africa with 33.3per cent penetration and placed number 49 on the global rating.

DigitalSENSE Business News recalls that though companies such as Globacom had been licenced by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to provide the fixed line network since 2003, the concentration has been tilted towards mobile network deployment which brings  about quicker revenue.

With the ITU’s report showing Zimbabwe, Namibia, Egypt and South Africa coming after Ghana, Digital Business News hopes that despite some challenges that Nigeria will begin to implement the National Broadband Plan that will see to investors deploying the submarine cables onshore of Nigeria to drive the fixed line broadband growth to the last mile.
