No fewer than 90 foreign and local models are expected at
the Port Harcourt International Fashion Week slated for between September 20
and 23.
Rivers State Commissioner for Information and
Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, who disclosed this during a pre-event
briefing in Port Harcourt, the state capital, said the programme would be
tagged; ‘Native and Vogue’.
Semenitari explained that one of the programmes to be
showcased in the three-day event was a fashion competition where the winner
would go home with the sum of N500, 000, as well as six month training in South
Africa.
She said former Miss World and Most Beautiful Girl in
Nigeria, Miss Agbani Darego, who has been named the Ambassador of the Port
Harcourt International Fashion Week, will also be at the occasion.
The Commissioner said, aside being a role model to the
fashion world, Darego was assigned the role in view of her immense contribution
to the growth of fashion in the country and the world at large.
Semenitari explained that the fashion show would be
organised by the state government in conjunction with Neo Mantra, Bunor
Creazioni and Vanguard Allure.
The commissioner further said that renowned fashion
designers, including Frank Osodi, would grace the event aimed at showcasing the
state (Rivers) as the fashion destination of the country and to restore the
‘garden city status’, of Port Harcourt
According to her, “Port Harcourt is a destination of
choice as far as entertainment, fashion and hospitality are concerned. Fashion
is an industry that encourages you to express yourself and it has the potential
of providing revenue for the state.
“It is on this note that the Rivers State Government is
supporting the Port Harcourt International Fashion Week. We want to showcase
fashion as the pride of the people. It is a fantastic way of tapping into the
opportunities available in Rivers State in the area of fashion.”
In his remark, renowned fashion designer, Frank Osodi,
explained that many fashion experts would be coming from every part of the world
and expressed gratitude to the state government for her interest in the
programme.
Osodi described the programme as an effort towards
creating opportunities for young designers and other talents, saying, “This is
an opportunity for them to be discovered. The International Fashion Week is
going to be done annually.
“We all have a role to play to make Nigeria a great
place. Thirty models from Rivers State will also be part of the show. It is an
opportunity for us to give them international exposure.”
