‘Connectivity is major issue in broadband’

Broadband which allows telecom users to access information through the Internet using one of several high-speed transmissions is said to have the challenges in connectivity.

This position was made known to DigitalSENSE Business News by the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel Nigeria, Mr Segun Ogunsanya, while speaking  on the topic “The Nigerian Telecom Market: Championing the African cause through Broadband” at the 2013 Nigerian Telecom Development Lecture (NITDEL) in Lagos, Friday.

Ogunsanya said that one cannot talk about development without telecom, and in Nigeria which is the epicentre of development in Africa, one of the indices for its development is the infrastructure.

The Airtel Nigeria CEO said that Broadband takes the masses to the world in areas of health, development, education, governance, financial services and agriculture.
Ogunsanya pointed out that 50 per cent of internet subscription in India comes from Broadband, whereas Nigeria needs a spectrum for mobile broadband.

He explained that 70 million people are on the internet and only six per cent have access to broadband which should be the darling of any investor.

And called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to conduct licencing 2.5/2.6GHz spectrum in 2014, stressing that Nigeria remains at risk of not meeting the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) 2015 timeline for migration from analogue to digital broadcasting.

He recommended that there should be a Right of Way (ROW) waiver with the states as it cost operators N6.5million per kilometre to secure ROW in Nigeria and commended the Minister of Communications Technology and NCC for what they have achieved so far with respect to the ROW.
