ICANN plans session on 5-yr strategic plan in Durban 2013

With the dates for the Durban public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) draw near, the world coordinating body of Internet identifiers is planning to have a session for a new ICANN 5-year Strategic plan.

Confirming this to DigitalSENSE Business News, the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives and Advisor to the President ICANN, Ms. Denise Michel said the special community event has been slated in Durban for Monday July 15 for an hour 30 minutes; between 11-12.30.

This, she said, would help build ICANN's new, overarching vision and five-year strategic plan.

According to her, Xplane, the professional facilitators who have worked with the ICANN Board, staff and some community groups, will help out in running a cross-constituency brainstorming and discussion session to yield focused input for ICANN's new strategic plan.

“This session also should help prompt more strategic conversations during our week in Durban and beyond,” she said.

Michel emphasised that building on previous discussions about how to help prepare ICANN for an increasingly complex world, this session will solicit input on eight key areas of consideration for the new strategic plan: role clarity; community; users; internationalization and regional development; Internet governance; security and stability; operational excellence; and domain name industry engagement.
