ALTON lauds Commtech on NCCT’13 outcome

THE Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria, (ALTON) has lauded the outcome of the meeting of the National Council on Communication Technology (NCCT) on the issue of multiplicity of taxes and regulations which has impacted significantly in the quality of services in the telecommunication industry in Nigeria.

The Chairman of ALTON, Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, made this remark in an interview with DigitalSENSE Business News in Lagos, stressing  that part of the problem of the industry  was the disconnect between the three ties of government on the issue of multiplicity of taxes, regulations and levies.

Adebayo said that the resolution reached by the council will help in moving the industry forward and assist the operators to improve on the quality of service on their various networks.

He explained that there was poor quality of service in most part of the country because the operators cannot go out assuming there is a fibre cut from 7 pm due the security situation in such areas until the next day.
Commenting on the issue of getting mast approval from the Lagos State government, the ALTON boss said that the association is dealing with it as the situation now is not different from what was adjudged previously between both parties.

He commended the leadership style of the Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson and for bringing stakeholders made up of Commissioners of Information Communication Technology (ICT) from various states to tackle the issue of taxes, regulations and levies.

“I was very impressed on the turnout especially the kind of caliber of people that attended, made up of commissioners of ICT, science, information technology from almost all the states. These are stakeholders in their own rights and are very important to some of the issues we have particularly at the states and local government levels with multiplicity of taxes and regulations, which has impacted significantly in the quality of services,” he added.
