Job loss: Social media profile bane of 1/10 young people



THE rate of unemployment in Nigeria may have heightened with number of youths without jobs based on inordinate social media profiles of some 6000 mobile users.

This has been found to be prevalent among youth people, according to a recent study made available to DigitalSENSE Business News, tagged ‘Young People’s Consumer Confidence (YPCC) Index,’ by the United Kingdom-based On Device Research Ltd.

The study also says that one in every 10 young people Nigeria may have been rejected for a job because of their poor social media profile.

“We have just finished the third wave of our Young People’s Consumer Confidence (YPCC) Index, which is designed to help businesses understand what young people aged 16-34 think about their economic and employment prospects, in both developed and growth markets,” the study revealed.

On Device Research Ltd also stated that the impact of social media on careers based on the survey conducted across six countries, namely Nigeria, China, India, Brazil, United States (US) and United Kingdom (UK); revealed that one in 10 young people have been rejected for a job because of their social media profile.

However, the survey noted that two thirds are not concerned that their use of social media now, may harm their future career prospects and are not deterred from using it.

On consumer confidence, the survey revealed that at the top line level consumer confidence amongst young people in growth markets are twice as high as the UK and US.

While the future employment confidence in growth markets, the survey stated is fuelled by young people’s optimism about their future employment prospects, with 88 per cent firmly believe they will get a better education than their parents versus their counterparts in developed markets who scored 64 per cent.

They were also more confident about earning a higher salary such as 89 per cent of them expressing optimism, whereas young people in developed markets were less certain to some 60 per cent.  

DigitalSENSE Business News gathered that the methodology used by OnDevice Research Ltd in the survey had 6000 demographically balanced mobile users aged 16-34 years old, across China, India, Nigeria, Brazil, US and UK, who completed the survey via the mobile Internet. Just as additional questions were asked from a larger sample size of 17,657, aged 16-34 about social media.
