The
Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) in
collaboration with Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)
has advanced plans to hold a 3-day workshop on Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC).
NIRA
is the managers of the nation’s country code
Top Level Domain, .ng, whereas ICANN is the global body in-charge of unique
identifiers; Internet Protocol (IP) addresses and Domain Name System (DNS).
President,
NIRA, Mrs. Mary Uduma, revealed this to DigitalSENSE Business News in a public statement endorsed by Head, Corporate Services and Membership,
Ms Ugo Akiri, at the weekend.
Mrs. Uduma also said that the event tagged DNSSEC Roadshow
would hold Wednesday 26 through Friday 28 June, 2013, at the Digital Bridge
Institute, Cappa, Oshodi, Lagos; the formerly NITEL Training School.
She
noted that the 3-day
workshop is an initiative of ICANN, emphasizing that DNSSEC Roadshow is one of
the AfrICANN Strategy unveiled at the Toronto ICANN 45 International Public
Meeting by the new ICANN President, Mr. Fadi Chehade,
in fulfilment of his promise to the Honourable Minister of Communications
Technology during the WSIS+10 in Geneva last May.
Also
speaking, the Chief Operating Officer, NIRA, Opeoluwa Odusan, pointed out that DNS
is a
critical and fundamental infrastructure for Internet service, while reiterating
that the DNSSEC Roadshow is aimed at promoting
the adoption of DNSSEC which integrates security to the Domain Name System,
generally, and in this instance, with specific focus on the .ng registry.
He expressed the hope
that as the DNSSEC train holds in Lagos, the commitment towards ensuring a much
more secure .ng domain name string would receive a big boost, adding this would
be a milestone, to herald a much safer .ng DNS as the internet
community in Nigeria throws its weight at the adoption of DNSSEC, and a more
secure internet by extension.
The COO also noted that the 3-day Workshop has been designed to sensitize all stakeholders, key players in the sector and the general public on the need to adopt a secure service in consonance with the objective of the DNSSEC, and in tune with respective mandates of the collaborating organisations.
