The Nigerian subscribers have been advised to take advantage of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) provided by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) instead of demanding for compensation from the telecom operators.

The Director of Public Affairs, NCC, Mr Tony Ojobo gave the charge, while speaking in an interview with DigitalSENSE Business News in Lagos, saying that  consumers’ experiences in quality of service varies from persons to persons, network to network and depending on the kind of packages that the consumers are using.

Ojobo explained that the demand by the National Association of Telecom Consumers (NATCOMS) is legitimate, but notes that there is consumerism all over the world, which is about giving the consumers what they desire.

“We believe that they can make their case with the service providers. The commission is studying that and we are looking at the complaint that has come from NATCOMS. Like I said the commission has introduced a number of regulatory approach to our regulations that will enable the consumers enjoy better services.
When there is competition and issue of compensation, competition takes care of it.

“This is because a particular network could decide to compensate their subscribers. It doesn’t have to be across the networks. I believe right now that some clever network can seize the initiative to say, look we are going to compensate our subscribers and any network that does that will likely snatch subscribers of other networks.
“We believe that competition will address this issue, so let the subscribers put pressure on the service providers to ask for compensation and any provider that is able to notice the kind of passion that they have in the market can decide to offer compensation. Compensation is just one activity, but the issue of service provision is continuous,” he said.

DigitalSENSE Business News  learnt from the NCC Director of Public Affair, that the payment of compensation today would not address the quality of service that necessitated the compensation, but competition is supposed to do that based on Mobile Number Portability (MNP) provided by the commission that enables subscribers to make a choice by porting.
