The Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has explained why his administration introduced ‘Opon Imo’ tablet of knowledge to the schools across the state.

Advancing his reasons to DigitalSENSE Business News last weekend in Lagos, Gov. Aregbesola said that only 30 per cent of students from the state were matriculating before he assumed office and his government decided to introduce Opon Imo to ease the learning of senior secondary school students in the state.

Opon Imo, he said, is a standalone, e-learning tablet that provides the senior secondary students with the educational materials such as text books, tutorials and practice questions required to prepare for school leaving examinations.

Speaking on the development of the tablet of knowledge at NITDEL 2013, the Governor of the State of Osun, Ogbeni Aregbesola said that the device is first of its kind initiative in Nigeria and arguably Africa.
His administration, Aregbesola revealed brought the manufacturing company to Osun State to mass produce the device in order to generate employment and for other states to benefit from it for the development of knowledge in their various vicinities.

DigitalSENSE Business News notes that the tablet is a portable electronic device, with touchscreen interface and is available across the open source Android operating system that has 512MB of RAM and internal storage capacity of 32GB. Just as it tackles learning problem using contemporary ICTs, indigenous content, while taking into account socially embedded factors accordingly.

Equally, the testimony from the students, DigitalSENSE Business News learnt shows that 150,000 Opon Imo has been distributed to all senior secondary students across the state which makes learning a fun and easier for them.
