The Nigerian Communication Commission, (NCC) has said that the passage
of Cybercrime bill into law will help to check the rising incidence of online fraud
in the country.
Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo made this declaration in a
chat with DigitalSENSE
Business News at the just concluded Nigerian Telecom Development
Lecture (NITDEL) in Lagos, stressing that there are a lot of criminality going
on today online.
Ojobo said that the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dame
Patience Jonathan was honoured as the ITU Champion for the Child’s Online
Protection.
He informed DigitalSENSE
Business News that Nigeria through the NCC is playing a key role
in it, following the tragic incident of a young lady that was killed after using Facebook
to lure her to a hotel in Lagos.
“That has drawn the attention to cybercrime, and there are a lot of
equipment coming out of it. So, there is need to have a law in place to protect
people from the hazard that arise from the usage of the social media and the
internet. We believe that cybercrime bill is going to address that.
“You know that when you don’t have a law it becomes difficult to deal
with issue that is a crime. Once you have the law there, it provides the
platform for the criminals to be prosecuted. It puts a check on people who are
thinking of committing crime using the internet as a platform to do that. We
believe that the National Assembly will quickly pass the bill into law as that
bill is going to protect many lives in Nigeria,” he said.
Further, Ojobo noted that people are saying that there are scams in
Nigeria and as much,Nigeria is not insulated from cybercrime, but of course, “You
have a lot of scams going on round the world, and Nigeria is rated number six
in teams of crimes that are committed on the internet.”
