Johnson, CommTech Minister |
Communications
Technology Minister, Omobola Johnson has attributed the current poor Quality of
Service (QoS) to system overhaul of the service providers.
Other
actions giving rise to the poor service, she listed to include aggressive
promotion of their brands, terrorist attack in the northern part and the flood
which affected several communities.
According
to her, the major reason behind the poor QoS aside the terrorist attack and
flood is the investment for expansion and infrastructure upgrade of the service
providers, and the promotions which is causing degradation of the network.
She also
disclosed that the ministry has been in touch with the necessary stakeholders;
the service providers, states governments and other concerned stakeholders in
order to decide how best to tackle the issue.
Speaking
to newsmen after a Federal Executive Council meeting recently, Mrs. Johnson said
that a consensus has been reached that the service providers should upgrade
their provision of service or be sanctioned, as the Nigerian Communications
Commission would play a decisive role in curtailing congestion of mobile
telephone traffic.
"We
have been in discussions with the network operators, the NCC and we are working
to improve the quality of service. In the coming days, NCC would curtail
or stop all promotions that either increase subscribers-base, that add the
subscribers' minutes or add to the subscriber-base that are causing additional
congestion on the network,” she said.
The Minister equally said that they
agreed that in December, there would be another detailed review of the quality
of service indicator and any network operator that is found wanting will be
appropriately sanctioned by the regulator.
"I think at this point in time, given the
poor quality of service people are experiencing, we are not ruling out some
kind of consumer compensation. We understand and feel the pains of Nigerians
when you try to make phone calls and you cannot make them,” she said.
... Making SENSE of digital revolution!
