Nigeria sets up N550 million IT fund

Johnson, CommsTech Minister
The Federal government of Nigeria, may have advanced plans for the establishment of N550 million Information Technology Development Fund (ITDF) in a bid to "empower young and talented Nigerians to tap into the potentialities of the sector for the development of the nation."
AP reports that Communication Technology minister Omobola Johnson made this disclosure in Abuja last Sunday that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) remained neglected by the government, but with the creation of the ministry, the current administration  is now alive to the sector as a necessary tool for national development.
Allaying fears of residents of major cities, Johnson said there was no empirical evidence that telecommunication masts emit substances harmful to human beings.
However, the ministry and regulatory bodies in the telecommunication and environment sectors would ensure that infrastructure was not erected in harmful manner, she added.
According to Omobola Johnson, "the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) is also doing some advocacy around whether or not the base stations are harmful because there are a lot of researches that had been done by the WHO, the UN and different other agencies."
"As at today, there is no empirical evidence that emissions from base stations cause harm," she said.
