DigitalSENSEBusiness News looks into the recent crisis in Port Harcourt leading to the death of corp members and some students, onto the closure of UNIPORT.
Choba, a suburb of Port Harcourt, where the University of Port Harcourt is located, is in the news again, but again not for good reason.
DigitalSENSE Business News gathered that two male youth corp members and a female student were shot dead penultimate Thursday night by unknown gunmen.
The incident occurred at 10 p.m. in Rumuchakara, popularly known as Mission Road. One of the victims was said to have just finished celebrating his passing out from the compulsory one year National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme the same day and was going home when the tragedy struck.
It was also learnt that the female victim was a student of Uniport.
An eyewitness confirmed the shooting, stressing the incident took place in front of a beer parlour, where the just-passed-out NYSC member and his friends went to clink glasses for being qualified.
DigitalSENSE Business News further gathered that the trio were already through with the party and were strolling home, when one of them pushed down some roasted plantains, being sold by the road side.
The plantain seller was said to have insisted that they pay for her damaged wares, when some men in a black Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) arrived the spot and the occupants pulled their rifles and pumped hot leads into the victims.
Equally, the bandits were said to have shot severally at them, and made sure they were dead before speeding off. Their bodies were later removed by the police and deposited at the morgue for post-mortem.
When contacted, the Public Relations of NYSC, Rivers State, Mr.  Benjamin Esan said the identity of the NYSC member could not be ascertained then. “It is difficult to know the identity of the victim now, since he just passed out,” he told journalists, but confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, the State Security Service (SSS) has arrested some suspects in connection with the murder of four students, Kelechi Ugonna, Lloyd Toku, Chidiaka Biringa and Tekena Erikena of the University of Port Harcourt, in Aluu community of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.
The four students were slaughtered and burnt to death with tires hung on their neck by Aluu villagers on the suspicious of being thieves. The jungle justice done to the students were filmed and posted online went viral generating reactions from across the world.
The extrajudicial killings also gave rise to protest with more 30 cars set ablaze and destroyed properties worth millions of naira leading to the closure of the school by the university authority ordering students and staff to vacate the school premises until after the management might have sensed a very peaceful atmosphere for learning to continue.
