Three of the Code Division Multiple
Access (CDMA) operators in Nigeria are at the verge of merging hence seek for
merging approval the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
A director with the nation’s
telecommunication regulatory agency, Lolia Emakpore noted that mobile
subscriber in Nigeria would grow by 14 per cent, making it 120 million in 2013.
Although growth has been recorded
in the past, DigitalSENSE Business News learnt that a major part of the
subscribers are on the GSM operators and the CDMA operators can’t compete
favourably with their GSM counterparts.
According to Emakpore, discussions
are still on and that NCC is looking at the potential of the three operators
coming to form a bigger one.
Believing that the telecom industry
is still vibrant with short profitability issues, Emakpore noted that growth in
data and internet usage would pay off the decline in revenues from voice.
... Making SENSE of digital revolution!
