The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Eugene Juwah has declared that the future of telecommunications is sky bright with broadband.

Juwah made this disclosure to DigitalSENSE Business News at the 11th annual forum of the Commonwealth Telecommunication Organisation (CTO) in his welcome address to the occasion which has at its theme: Innovation through broadband, in Abuja Transcorp Hilton.

According to him, the telecom revolution in Nigeria in the past 11 years have witnessed huge deployment and take up of voice-based services to push teledensity by 81 per cent as at July 2013, while data and huge bandwidth-driven applications are still a challenge.

“We are in full realization of the impact of broadband to the overall development of the economy in terms of stimulation of business activities, providing support for other sectors of the economy, providing better living and governance, and improving relations between Nigerian and other nations, especially with fellow Commonwealth countries,” he said.

He also said that the theme of this forum was very apt and thought provoking as well as challenging to this nation at the current stage of Nigeria’s ICT evolution, than the broadband phenomenon.

Juwah further commended the Federal Government for what he described as a highest-level of cooperation which has adopted broadband as a platform to leverage and improve on the gains already made in the telecommunications sector.

“This is why His Excellency, Mr. President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, recently approved the ‘National Broadband Development Plan 2013-2018 report,” produced by a presidential broadband committee,” he said.

Also speaking, the chairman of NCC board, Engr. Peter Igoh said that NCC is reputed for having an international cooperation for Nigeria in the area of ICT.

He recalled to DigitalSENSE Business News that Nigeria and ITU recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding for setting up a regional cybersecurity hub in Nigeria.

This support from ITU, he said, explained in its representation at this event.

“We wish to extend our profound gratitude to the leadership of the important body,” he said.

... Making SENSE of digital revolution!
