The second edition of the International
Girls in ICT Day celebration, an initiative of the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU), billed to hold in Lagos on April 25, 2013,
would seek to ensure that participating girls are taken through some practical
experiences in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
The organisers said at the weekend that
the event would start with visits to some ICT companies where the girls will be
put through on technical activities in the firms, just as arrangements for
internship programmes for the girls is in advance stage.
The Chief Executive Officer, eBusiness
Life Communication, Mrs Ufuoma Emuophedaro, while speaking on preparations for
the event disclosed that special awards will be given to women who have been
exceptional in the growth of the ICT industry in Nigeria.
She also revealed that prominent
Nigerian women, both in the public and private sectors of the industry will
grace the occasion.
The first edition of the celebration in
Nigeria organised by eBusiness Life, which got an award certificate from the
ITU, was chaired by the CEO of MainOne Cable Company, Ms Funke Opeke and was
attended by dignitaries from all subsectors of the industry.
At the event, the Minister of
Communications Technology had urged girls to come to the forefront of
developing the ICT industry and contribute their quota to the growth of the
country’s economy.
As part of this year’s week-long event,
activities will include a one-day seminar, Facility Tours, Open Quiz sessions,
Mentorship Forum, and Awards to deserving female ICT professionals who have
made their marks in the industry, among other events.
International Girls’ Day is an
initiative launched through ITU Resolution 70 with the idea of creating a
global environment that will empower and encourage girls and young women to
consider careers in the field of information and communication technologies. The
Union declared the 4th (fourth) Thursday of April every year as a day of encouragement
to girls and young women to consider careers in ICT and society is reminded to
support them in their choice.
