Ericsson flags-off annual mobile application awards 2013


Ericsson has flagged-off its annual application competition and awards for young mobile apps’ developers globally.
A press statement made available to DigitalSENSE Business News, endorsed by the Communications Manager for West Africa, Ms Omasan Ogisi invited developers, start-ups and anyone who has an idea for a great application, to enter and win.
This year, she said, there will be a global competition and several regional competitions.
First prize, she disclosed is EUR 25,000, about N 5,012,515.14, second prize is EUR 10,000 and third prize is EUR 5,000.
The Ericsson Application Awards, she said, offers any team the opportunity to gain a foothold in the app industry while also earning recognition and making contacts within the telecom industry.
She explained that in 2012 there will be two categories, namely the one for students and one for small and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 100 employees.
According to her, the theme for this year’s competition is “Apps for City Life”, in support of Ericsson’s vision for a Networked Society, in which through a combination of mobility, broadband, the cloud, applications and services – anything and everything is connected.
Teams, she said, need to develop an application based on the Android platform that addresses the theme.
DigialSENSE Business News, recalls that last year’s winner in the company category was a mobile health-care app developed in Kenya.
First prize in the student category, she noted, was awarded to a painting and chatting app developed in China.
She pointed out that finally, a medico-social platform that provides access to medical information developed in Egypt won the Technology for Good prize.
A total of 143 teams from more than 50 countries took part and a total of 242 ideas, videos and apps were submitted; twice as many as in the previous year.
This year, several prizes will be awarded in each category which includes: First place: EUR 25,000, Second place: EUR 10,000, Third place: EUR 5000 and Fourth and fifth place: certificates.
