New RAA to transform domain name industry – ICANN

President of ICANN’s Generic Domains Division, Akram Atallah has said that granting approval to the latest Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) by the board of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) would transform the domain name industry.
Atallah who was reacting to the approval by ICANN board, said that based on the intervention of multiple stakeholders which weighed in; from law enforcement, to business, to consumers have ended up with this agreement, which affords better protections and positively redefines the domain name industry.
DigitalSENSE Business News recalls that ICANN’s Board of Directors Friday, June 28, 2013 approved a new Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA) that is expected to bring continued improvements to the domain name ecosystem.
It was also gathered that the agreement follows over a year of negotiations between ICANN and its Registrar Stakeholders Group and represents marked improvements over the last RAA approved in 2009.
The vice president, Domain Management, MarkMonitor Incorporated Mr. Matt Serlin, commended the approval, saying that he was pleased.
“We will now work on implementation of the numerous new requirements in the 2013 RAA and we hope to continue the interaction with ICANN staff and the broader community in the future, as registrars roll out these changes," he said.
Further acclaimed achievements in the RAA, as highlighted by the ICANN Director of Global Media Affairs, Mr. Brad White to correspondent, include the establishment of a registrar point-of-contact for reporting abuse; verification and validation of WHOIS - domain registrant’s data and clear establishment of registrar responsibility for reseller compliance.

Additionally, Mr. White noted that the new RAA include enhanced compliance tools that broaden suspension and termination tools, clarification of audit rights, access to information to facilitate ongoing investigations and annual certification requirements.
