SIM card: MTN, Etisalat deactive unregistered subscribers

In line with the directives of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the largest mobile network operator, MTN Nigeria and acclaimed innovative network, Etisalat, have commenced deactivation of unregistered SIM cards on their networks.

For Akinwale Goodluck, the Corporate Services Executive at MTN Nigeria, the company reaffirmed its commitment to NCC directive.

"We therefore wish to inform affected subscribers that they can reconnect their lines by visiting the nearest MTN Service Centre, ConnectStore or SIM registration point. We have set up registration points in several places for this purpose," he said, explaining to DigitalSENSE Business News that the process of reconnection is easy.

"On arrival, you will be required to complete the SIM registration process or update your personal information and provide biometric data, after which your SIM card will be re-activated as soon as possible,” he said.

MTN, therefore urge all affected customers not to panic, as its team of customer service officers are more than ready to assist in reactivating their lines once they have completed their SIM registration as mandated by the NCC.

In a related development, Etisalat Nigeria, said at the weekend that it has complied with SIM registration deadline by NCC

The Chief Executive Officer of Etisalat Nigeria, Mr. Steven Evans, confirmed to DigitalSENSE Business News that it had fully complied with the NCC deadline of disconnecting all unregistered SIM cards by midnight on the 30th June 2013.

“We made strenuous efforts to reach all remaining subscribers who had not registered or with whom there was a problem in terms of the registration information recorded,” he said stressing this included multiple phone calls and text messages.

Evans also said that in any process there could of course be mistakes and if any subscribers had been disconnected incorrectly they should go to an Etisalat Experience Centre to re register and reconnect to the Etisalat network.

He elucidated the significance of the exercise in the telecommunications industry, adding that SIM Registration helps service network operators know their customers better as well as help curb negative incidents such as loss of phone through theft, nuisance/hate text messages, fraud, threats amongst other incidents.

“We commend the NCC for taking this decision two years ago and also for their decision to grant operators an extra two months to persuade customers to register and to reconcile and eliminate any problems with the data collected from customers at registration,” he said, insisting that NCC could have done more than they have to eliminate the impact on genuine customers.

He emphasized that as a company, Etisalat strives to deliver the best customer experience through quality of services, innovation and operational excellence, even as Etisalat has worked closely with the NCC to ensure that the customer is always put first whether it is in the case of SIM card registration, offering a high quality of service or in Mobile Number Portability.

“The customer is at the heart of everything Etisalat does,” Evans declared.
