US records 13m online music subscription in 2012

(Breaking News)
About 13 million music subscriptions were made online in the United States in the just ended year, 2012.

These subscription network services also saw drop in music piracy by 25 per cent since 2007, according to study made available exclusively to DigitalSENSE Business News by Ms Sarah Wenger as part of an online graduate programme.

She noted that in 2010, the music subscription on services like Spotify and MOG showed 8.2 million subscriptions and this has continued to witness a record increase to 13 million two years later.

Equally, she said that the study proved the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) wrong for claiming that online access to movies has given rise to piracy, thus affecting revenue for companies, but in reality she maintained that online access to movies has helped companies gain more revenue.

The study further cited for instance that in 2011, Digital Performance Royalties increased by 17 per cent with direct reference to an online radio, Pandora from $249 to $292 within the period the study reviewed.

Another practical example by the study was the fact emanating from Louis Ck, who released a video that was streamed only online, which cost him $200,000, about N312,900 to produce but by selling at $5 per download, he made some $650,000, about N101,692,500 million in 72 hours, bulk of which has been donated to charity.

The study showed that the United States, currently has 1820 movie theaters, while advocating that RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) should embrace Information Technology (IT) rather than fighting over IT adoptation and its acclaimed consequences.

... Making SENSE of digital revolution!
