Why we're offering .ML free - AGETIC

The Malian managers of the .ML Top Level domain name space, the Agency des Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication (AGETIC), has adduced reasons it decided to offer its domain names for free as from July 15, this year.

For now, .ML stands out as the only country code Top Level on offer free-of-charge across the continent of Africa as published by the Dot ML Registry.

This was revealed at the 46 public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in Beijing, China as prelude to forthcoming public meeting to be held in Durban, South Africa in July 2013.

According to its Chef Service Gestion, AGETIC, Hawa Diakite, by providing free domain names to internet users worldwide is a great opportunity to populate the .ML domain name.

Diakite also disclosed that Dot ML, managed by the Agence des Technologies de l’Information et de la Communication (AGETIC) is a generic, unrestricted, clean and global Top Level Domain (TLD) for any interested internet enthusiasts without restrictions on registrations and renewal.

“Providing free domain names to our own community and to internet users worldwide is a great opportunity for us,” Diakite said, explaining that because of the events in the Northern part of Mali the registry has been under a lot of stress lately.

“We believe that providing free domain names to our internet population will greatly improve the usage and the knowledge of the IT industry in our country,” he said.

The .ML Registry would be powered by Freedom Registry which also operates .TK. Dot TK is the largest country code on the internet, with more than 16 million active domain names which also runs AnyCast cloud with servers in 15 countries ensuring uptime of all domains.

Information available to DigitalSENSE Business News, the processes of offering of .ML comprises a Sunrise, Landrush and General Availability phase.

As gathered by DigitalSENSE Business News, the Sunrise commences on May 1, 2013 to last for a month, that is until May 31st.

This will be followed by the Landrush to begin Jun 1 till July 14, 2013, while the General Availability phase is expected to kick off on July 15, 2013, which is billed to be a key event during the forthcoming ICANN public meeting in Durban, South Africa.

Also commenting, the General Manager, AGETIC, Moussa Dolo expressed excitement over the decision.

“We are proud to be the first African nation to give domain names for free .By providing free domain names to internet users worldwide we will put Mali back on the map. We wish to show the rest of the world the fantastic opportunities our country has to offer,” Dolo said.
