African countries in top-9 of people living with HIV/AIDs globally

Africa seems to be making inroad in the wrong direction with the spread of Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) on the continent with top-nine effected countries.

This is more alarming with the fact that Six African countries are leading on HIV/AIDS spread, namely South Africa with 5,600,000, Nigeria 3,400,000, Kenya and Tanzania 1,600,000 each, Mozambique and Uganda coming fourth with 1,400,000 respectively.

According to the United Nations Global Report on HIV/AIDS 2012 made available to DigitalSENSE Business News it is estimated that a total of 34,000,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS, including adults and children, with Africa playing host to 44.5 per cent of the total global number of People Living with HIV/AIDS.

Apart from United States of America (USA) which record stood at 1,300,000, African countries also made the top-nine on the global list with a record of 34,000,000, thus making an estimated figure of 18,870,000.

Other African countries on top-9 include Zimbabwe -1,200,000; Zambia 970,000; Malawi -910,000; and Ethiopia - 790,000 followed by China with 780,000 people living with HIV/AIDS.

The report also stated that the 34,000,000 PLWHA, 107 countries were surveyed with the bulk of the estimated data coming from developing countries.

DigitalSENSEBusiness News gathered that for most countries, UNAIDS provided estimates as well as ranges around the estimates that define the boundaries within which the actual numbers lie.

Yet for some countries, UNAIDS provides only a range, while some of these data were included above as appropriate.
