ALTON says don’t judge us by QoS alone

The Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has advised Nigerians not to judge the contribution of its membership with only issues surrounding Quality of Service (QoS) alone, DigitalSENSE Business News reports.

ALTON made this request through its chairman, Mr. Gbenga Adebayo during a media tour of his company, the Communications Network Support Services Limited (CNSSL) ultra modern call center at MayFair Gardens, Lagos, Thursday.

He told DigitalSENSE Business News that today, ALTON and its members are being condemned and under-rated as non-performance due to the perception of Nigerians over the state of Quality of Service.

“We’re batched from all sides due to issues of QOS,” he lamented, stressing that QoS is an on-going process or consistent and continuous effort is being made to achieve it.

According to him, all the good of the industry is been accessed from QoS, noting that this has seen the rating of all players going down.

“No one is talking about the impact of employment creation again, no one is talking about the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) of telecoms, no one is talking about the development of our national economy, for an industry that is contributing over 8 per cent to our Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” he said.

In addition, Adebayo said that the banking sector, for instance, is doing 4 per cent but they have been able to manage public perception better.

Positing that there is no body in this room, who does not use the banking service and there is no one who does not have poor customer service related experience with the banks, but as an industry the banking sector is still well respected, because they manage better their public perception.

Nigerians and media specifically, he said, must eschew traits of discouragement by avoiding sweeping condemnation of the telecom industry in the public places, insisting that the industry is key to national economy growth and key to future development.

“We must encourage operators, we must not discourage practitioners and we must not discourage investors by creating an image of a bad industry using only QoS as a factor,” he urged.

Adebayo also told DigitalSENSE Business News that there are some good things happening in this industry, one of which is CNSSL, operating as a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) company with about 6,000 Nigerian graduates.

“Our organization is one of the products of the good that telecoms has brought, we currently engage almost 6,000 Nigerian graduates, in direct employment and as high as the workforce of some state government or Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA),” he declared.

Adebayo said they applaud MTN Nigeria for the opportunity given to local companies like CNSSL, which has boosted the development of national human capital among other things.
