Nigerian student trades school fees for Indian hemp

GHANA-based Nigerian student and a son of retiree, Udiomeh Kufre Ita, of the Faculty of Management Sciences, Regent University, was arrested recently at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos for trading his school fees for Indian hemp by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
A press statement made available to DigitalSENSE Campus Pavillion, NDLEA said the suspect, Udiomeh Kufre Ita, was caught with 1.745 kilogrammes of dried weeds which tested positive to cannabis, also known as ‘Igboo’ or Indian hemp.
As said by NDLEA Lagos Airport Commander, Hamza Umar in the press statement endorsed by the spokesperson, Mitchell Ofoyeju, the suspect was found in possession of the drug during the routine search of passengers on Africa World Airlines flight from Accra, Ghana.
“An undergraduate was found in possession of two parcels of cannabis weighing 1.745kg during routine search of passengers. The drug was hidden inside his bag containing personal effects. He was immediately arrested and the case is under investigation,” he said.
Also, he disclosed that NDLEA has commenced investigation on the case and the suspect is currently assisting narcotic investigators.
In his confessional statement, Ita was quoted as revealing to NDLEA investigators that he used his tuition fees to purchase the drug found on him.
“I spent my school fees on cell phone, smoking hemp and attending night clubs. I bought a cell phone for N107,000 and spent my school fees recklessly. I thought I could make enough profit from the sale of cannabis to offset the deficit in my tuition. I bought each parcel of hemp for 220 Ghana cedis. I did not know what came over me and I am afraid to go to my parents. My father is a retiree,” Ita said.
Ita, a native of Akwa Ibom State, said he hitherto lived at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
