The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has introduced ‘In
Case of Emergency’ (ICE) campaign as option to assist mobile telecommunication
users in the country during emergencies.
Sources close to FRSC confirmed to DigitalSENSE Business News that
this concept is to enable accident victims to be linked up as soon as possible
with their relations during emergencies, especially when such a person is
incommunicado.
FRSC explained, all
it takes is for every individual, especially Nigerian road users to save given
number(s) as ‘ICE’ which makes it easier for accident victim relatives to be
contacted.
Applauding ICE campaign, one of FRSC special marshals, Chris
Kehinde Nwandu noted that most Nigerians, nowadays carry with them mobile phones
with some numbers stored in, but in the event of emergency, it is difficult to
identify who to call.
"We all carry our mobile phones with names and numbers
stored. If we were to be involved in an accident or taken ill, the people
attending to us would have our mobile phones, but would not know who to call,”
he lamented, stressing that ICE is a method of contact during emergency
situations.
He made it clear that as mobile phones are carried by the
majority of the population, only what is required is for mobile telecom consumers
to store the number(s) of a contact person or persons who should be contacted
during emergency under the name 'ICE'.
Nwandu also urged Nigerians to embrace this ICE campaign,
even as the concept of 'ICE' gains momentum.
Equally, DigitalSENSE Business News gathered
that the idea was initiated by a
paramedic who discovered that when he went to the scenes of accidents there
were always mobile phones with patients, but they do not know which number to
call.
The paramedic, therefore, thought that it could be a good
idea if there was a nationally recognized name like ICE for this campaign.
With ICE, FRSC official emphasized, that in an emergency
situation, paramedics and hospital staff would now be able to quickly contact
the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE' on your
mobile phone.
“It really can save your life, or put a loved one's mind at
rest. For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3,” FRSC
official enjoined.
