Juwah, NCC boss, wins African Innovation award 2014

The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah emerged top in this year’s “Icon of Africa Information Awards” at the 2014 African Innovation Awards and Cyber Nigeria Forum, held at the Sheraton Hotels Lagos recently, reports DigitalSENSE Business News.

Dr. Bayero Agabi Managing Editor of Cyber Africa and Chairman of the organizing Committee of African Innovation Awards told DigitalSENSE Business News that “the award is bestowed on innovators and policy makers that have used their offices, privileges and skills to promote Information Communication Technology for development and benefits of the society at large.”

Dr. Juwah, he said, beat two other high profile nominees to the grand prize having seen off the challenge from Dr. Stephen-Sipho Mncube Chairman Independent Communications Authority of South Africa and Mr. Francis Wangusi Director-General of Kenya Communications Commission to the award.

The 2014 Africa Innovation Award is in recognition of Juwah’s achievements and efforts towards ensuring broadband availability and affordability.

Dr. Juwah emerged the winner in recognition of his campaign for the affordability of internet and other telecommunication services which the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) under Dr. Juwah has brought to bear on tariffs for SMS, the introduction of Mobile Number Portability to provide choice for the consumer, the successful completion of SIM Card Registration project and firm stance that he has taken against service providers being sanctioned for not meeting the key performance indicators by the commission on Quality of Service among others.

Some of these actions have improved the ratings of the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), and have positively affected the Nigerian consumer of telecommunication services in one way or another including broadband penetration in Nigeria telecommunication sector, to make broadband affordable and evenly distributed across the country.

The Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) also won the Best Government Website Award at the Africa Innovation Awards. The Commission was recognized for the best website among government agencies in Nigeria, which offers easy access to government information at the speed of thought building capacity and consolidation, which has helped transform the commission to the envy of the public sector model enterprise today.

The award which was presented by Nigeria’s Minister of Communication Technology Mrs. Omobola Johnson who was represented by Mr. Tope Fashedemi, Director of e-governance at the Ministry thanked Tribe Media Company the organizers for the wonderful award. We use this to further “reiterate the commitment of the commission to empower the consumers with the provision of quality and affordable telecommunication services” he said.

He dedicated the award to the Nigerian consumers and hope in the very near future, there will be a very considerable improvement in the quality of service and access to broadband which will be made available, accessible and affordable.


Other categories of winners include, Best Government Website (MDA CATEGORY), Nigerian Communication Commission, Financial Software Provider of the year Precise Financial Systems, Enterprise Solution Providers of the year-VOADCOM, Best Pan African OEM RLG, Outstanding recognition for the Promotion of ICT4D National Information Technology Development Agency among many others.
