News visited GSM village recently to know how it has fared over the years as a
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) product market. Our
correspondent had an audience with the Imo-born chairman of the GSM Village
Traders’ Association (GVTA) Ikeja-Lagos State, Mr. Emeka Agbogu, who was
emphatic that the market has a tradition for selling only genuine phones.
Excerpts:
What
is GSM Village all about?
It is called GSM Village because we
sell mainly phones and their accessories.
Are
you implying that it is not a major market for anything other than GSM?
As the name goes, GSM Village, we
want to maintain that name and we also want to be particular about phones and
their accessories so that whenever anyone thinks of phones, he will think of
GSM Village before anywhere else.
Does
it mean that you don’t sell any other thing, like computers?
Although in GSM Village the main
line of business is phones and accessories, computers and computer parts are
also sold in some shops, which are in the minority. And this is because they
all belong to the ICT family. What makes GSM Village is the niche they have
created as a mobile phone market. Therefore, if you ask anyone trading in GSM
Village what they sell, the first answer you will get is ‘phones and
accessories.’ You may need to ask a second question before you hear computers
and computer parts.
What
is the niche about GSM Village?
One of the frustrations of phones’
users is where to get genuine quality phones; irrespective of the prices they
are being sold. At GSM Village, varieties of phones abound and at competitive
prices too. GSM Village is all about quality and the only place where quality
is continuously guaranteed.
In a case where fault is identified
with an item bought from the village, customers are guaranteed of swapping and
outright replacement. The good news is that the market has a group called the
Monitoring Group which work tirelessly to rid the village of fake products.
Have
there been any GSM Village customers with a testimony?
The array of customers from Ikeja,
Airport, Isolo and environs can testify to the claim that fake phones are not
sold at GSM Village and that’s why the village is always on recommendation to
prospective buyers.
When
was GSM Village Traders’ Association established?
The association was established in
2003, the association is as old as the village itself.
