UNIZIK: Prof. Ahaneku assumes office, receives SUG, assures of transformation agenda

Despite the controversy surrounding him election, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku, assumed office, just as he pledged to transform the university within his five-year tenure, reports DigitalSENSE Campus Pavilion.

An official press statement from UNIZIK quoted Prof. Ahaneku as saying this when he met the leadership of the Students Union Executive of the University who paid him a courtesy visit to congratulate him on his recent laudable emergence as the 5thsubstantive Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK.

Elated VC expressed thanks to the students for the confidence they have in him and for finding time to pay him a visit.

Prof. Ahaneku recalled his student days and said that the University exists because of the students, underscoring the act that university has united all inside the ivory tower with common destiny, common goal where knowledge is imparted and ultimately aimed in solving the problems of society.

The University, he recalled under the first Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kenneth Onwuka Dike suffered immensely;(the first ever Nigerian VC) and also the Great Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe (the first President of independent Nigeria) after whom the University was named. The new VC therefore insisted that the University must continue to retain its first identity and called on the University community to be ready to make sacrifices for the growth of the University.

As said by him, what the University requires at this time is hard-work, dedication and loyalty so that our collective dream for the University will be realized.  He specifically requested the students’ leaders to imbibe due process in all they do while urging them to maintain the existing peace in the University which is the hallmark of the good character that UNIZIK students are known for.

Prof. Ahaneku called on the students to read their books and shun vices such as examination malpractices and other forms of indiscretions. He also called on the students to dialogue on issues that affect them as his doors are wide open for the students.

Speaking earlier the President of the Students Union Government (SUG) Comrade Chukwunonso Ibe assured the loyalty and support of the entire students population to the new incoming Vice-Chancellor of the University Prof. Joseph E. Ahaneku.


Comrade Ibe said he led the Students’ Union Executive Committee to congratulate the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor. He noted that students of the University closely monitored the process of the appointment and felt satisfied that a true academic and researcher has emerged as VC. Comrade Ibe thanked the Governing Council for a transparent process which led to the emergence of the new VC. 

In company of the Vice President Comrade Queen O. Agulefo; Chief Judge of the Students Court, Chief Justice Ifesinachi A. Muoneme; Speaker of the students Parliament Hon. Chekwube Okigbo; the youthful students’ leader expressed joy at the turn of events in UNIZIK, pledging the loyalty and support of the students in maintaining calm in the University. 

The students’ leader who described the new VC as humble, reiterated the readiness of the students to back the new VC in any situation and go to any length to assist him entrench the University as number one in the country. In return the students’ leader solicited for the support of the new Vice-Chancellor in affairs of the students. 
The VP Queen Agulefo, Okigbo Chekwube (Hon. Speaker) and Muoneme Ifesinachi (Chief Justice) in their various remarks thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the warm reception accorded them.
