FG intervenes to stop poly strike

THE Federal Government has entered into dialogue with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) over the latter’s threat to embark on strike over the dilapidating state of polytechnics in the country.

The Union has on August 1, this year, issued a 21-day ultimatum to embark on a seven day warning strike to be followed by an indefinite strike if the situation is not addressed.

At a meeting with the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, in Abuja yesterday, the union agreed to suspend the industrial action to allow time for implementation of the conclusion reached at the end of the meeting.

In a communiqué jointly signed by the National President of ASUP, Mr. Muhammad Ali Kabir, Deputy Director, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. W.A. Iweama; and Mrs. Chinedu Dike of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, the two parties agreed that ASUP should submit a comprehensive list of the defaulting Polytechnics in this regard to the Hon. Ministers of Education and Labour and Productivity.

“The Federal Ministry of Education shall liaise with NBTE to enforce its regulatory powers in order to ensure minimum standards for Polytechnics. The Ministry shall encourage state and privately owned Polytechnics to adopt paragraph 1.5 of the Agreement between FGN and ASUP on benchmark for the Polytechnic system,” it read.

According to a statement issued by the ministry yesterday, said: “The labour Ministry called on defaulting schools to strive to achieve the academic standards for their institutions within Nigeria’s Polytechnic system.”
