The race for the next African Development Bank Group (AFDB) president has began as former Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, has announced his candidature for the seat, DigitalSENSE Business News reports.
In a news release by Forbes Africa, DigitalSENSE Business News
gathered that the former Minister was in 2013 named as Forbes Africa’s “Person
of the Year” to commend his contributions to achieving Millennium Development
Goals.
Speaking further on his bid for the Presidency, the erstwhile
Agricultural Minister said his experience in the finance and agricultural
sectors across Africa has guaranteed him a first-hand solution to Africa’s
multi-faceted challenges. DigitalSENSE Business News learnt that he affirmed
his believe to lead and solidify Africa’s position as a global economic
powerhouse, while ensuring that the economic development benefits of all
Africans is meet.
“As AFDB President, I would draw extensively on this experience,” he said. “I seek to serve as a bridge between Francophone and Anglophone Africa, and between smaller and larger African countries. To achieve true success, we must move forward together as one.”
DigitalSENSE Business News gathered that under his leadership as a
Minister in the Nigerian Agriculture and Rural Development sector, the
agricultural sector was said to be transformed, resulting in large-scale job
generation and a significant reduction in food imports. He was also said to
have implemented industry-wide reforms to boost efficiency and profitability,
and eliminated the pervasive corruption that had paralyzed the sector for
decades.
